Notes from Europe
Over the past few weeks, our CEO Paul Naske spent time in three of Rua Bioscience's key European markets: Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom.
While they are often grouped together as "European cannabis markets", the reality is very different. Each market is distinct, evolving in its own way, and requires deep local knowledge to navigate each successfully.
GERMANY is a fascinating blend of a rapidly growing medical cannabis market alongside a large home-grow community. Telehealth pathways are relatively accessible within the broader EU framework, cannabis is increasingly accepted in society, and CBD flower remains highly visible.
CZECHIA is still in the early stages of medical cannabis development, operating alongside a very public retail environment where CBD flower is sold openly and tourist-focused dispensaries are commonplace. Understanding who the key players are and how the market functions on the ground is critical.
The UK presents a very different picture. Medical cannabis remains specialist-led, there is no legal home-grow culture, and the distinction between legal medical access and the illicit market is clear. What is encouraging is the growing acceptance among both patients and clinicians as legal pathways become better understood.
What was obvious is that all three markets continue to grow strongly. Patient adoption is increasing, healthcare professionals are becoming more familiar with cannabinoid medicines, and regulatory frameworks continue to mature.
For companies like Rua operating internationally, in-market knowledge matters. Market reports and desktop research are useful, but they can never fully replace in-market conversations - kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) - with patients, clinicians, distributors, regulators, and industry participants.
Seeing it for yourself changes your perspective and getting amongst it is key to setting up a global business from Ruatorea.
The opportunity remains significant, and the momentum behind medicinal cannabis across Europe continues to build.
