At Rua Bioscience, we proudly integrate Te Reo Maori into our products, reflecting our roots as a Maori founded company based in a predominantly Maori community. By naming our products in our indigenous language, we honour our heritage and the journey that has brought our products to market. Each name/word is given great consideration before final selection. Here are the Maori terms we incorporate, along with their translations, meanings and an audio file to aid pronunciation.

Rautini - Medicinal Cannabis

‘Rautini’ is a term coined by Ngarimu Parata (Ngati Porou), gifted to Rua Bioscience as a Maori name for medicinal cannabis. Rautini describes the cannabis plant, its functions, and the Rongoa (Medicine) derived from it.  

Ra - sun, or sun's rays

U – is the absorption of the sun's rays into the lead, it also refers to the female breast that provides milk and sustenance, this refers to the health benefits of the plant.

Rau - is the Māori word for leaf.

Rau – also means ‘hundreds’ and to ‘place into,’ so it’s interpreted to mean ‘where many innovations and ideas are placed into’.

Tini – means ‘many’ or ‘multiple’ and refers to the many health benefits of the plant.

The words ‘Rau’ and ‘Tini’ together means multiples of multiples and that reflects the multiple opportunities and possibilities of the plant and its medicinal qualities‘

Hihiko - Invigorate, Energetic

Hihiko - To be quick, brisk, cheerful, inspired, energetic, spirited, lively, invigorated

Rehu - Vapour or Mist

Rehu - A mist or haze, Rehu can also refer to very fine dust or vapour

Hakoa - THC

Hakoa - THC (terahydrocannabinol)

Ha - Breath, breath, essence or to inhale

Koa - Happy, euphoric

THC is a cannabinoid that makes the individual feel euphoric and intoxicated.

Hakoa kore - CBD

Hakoa kore - CBD (Cannabidiol)

Ha - Breath, breath, essence or to inhale

Koa - Happy, euphoric

Kore - Negative, nil, none, nothing

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active ingredient in cannabis that is derived from the hemp plant, but it does not cause a high and is not addictive

Puawai - Flower, Blossom

Puawai - Can refer to a flower or bud, it can also refer to the act of blossoming or opening out to a flower.

Ngawha - Bloom

Ngawha means ‘to bloom’ and can refer to a blooming plant or shrub

Hinu - Oil

Hinu - Oil, or can even be used to describe ‘fat’.

Kakara - Terpenes

Kakara - Terpenes, Smell, Aroma

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants including cannabis
